Creating a sun

Start with a new document, about 600x600.

  • Press CTRL+D to reset your color palletes to black and white.

  • Use the paint bucket tool to fill your background layer with black.
  • Then use the Circular Marquee tool to make a big round selection on the canvas.
    (note: hold down SHIFT while you make the selection to create a perfect round circle)

  • Now apply this filter: Filter » Render » Clouds
  • Now apply: Filter » Brush Strokes » Accented Edges.
    set: Edge Width: 7, Edge Brightness: 40, Smoothness:5

    You should still have your circle selection around the shape.

  • Go to: Filter » Distort » Spherize
    SET: Amount 100%, mode: normal.

    Then do this again, but this time apply 30%

  • Now you can press CTRL+D to deselect.

  • Aply this filter: Filter » Distort » Polar Coordinates
    SET: Polar to Rectangular

  • Then go to image » Rotate Canvas » 90CW

  • Then go to Filter » Stylize » Wind
    SET: Method: Wind, Direction: From the Right

  • Then go to Image » Rotate Canvas » 90CCW

    then apply: Filter » Distort » Polar Coordinates
    SET: Rectangular to Polar

  • Now go to: Filter » Distort » Ocean Ripple
    SET: Ripple Size: 5, Ripple Magnitude: 2

  • Now apply: Filter » Sharpen » Unsharp Mask
    SET: Amount: 250, Radius:6, Threshold: 85

  • Then go to Image » Adjustments » Color Balance.
    SET: Set all Shadows, Midtones, and Highlights to the following:

    (note: you can play around with these settings to get different shades of the colors)
